Risk management: Nick Abou Risk wins UKIPT Edinburgh and £50,000

August 22nd, 2010

ukiptthumb.JPGNick Abou Risk has won the UKIPT Edinburgh beating a field of 401 players for £50,000 and a £5,000 seat into the UKIPT Grand Final, aka EPT London. And didn't he play well. Having seized the chip lead at the end of Day 1B, albeit with Owen Robinson still ahead as Day 1A chip leader, he never looked back. Abou Risk started the tournament sat on the left of Jesse May and Liv Boeree, upon whom he wreaked merry hell. Boeree lost one huge pot to him, shoving a non-nut flush into, but of course, the nut flush. Abou Risk played a tough questioning brand of poker all the way through to the final table and ultimately to take down the inaugural UKIPT Edinburgh title.

Nick Abou Risk played great poker throughout the UKIPT Edinburgh main event

"I had a good feeling on that first day where I was talking through a lot of hands with Liv Boeree," said Abou Risk "Realising that she had some respect for my game gave me a lot of confidence and I started stealing a lot more blinds." Abou Risk wasn't the only player in contention though and must have been thankful that short stacks Owen Robinson (9th £3,400) and Jake Cody (11th £2,200) earned early dismissals after play restarted with 11 left at 3pm earlier today.

Jake Cody was the first player out today

All three of the Day 2 million chip club (Abou Risk, Joeri Zandvliet and Luke Marsh) made it to the final four, and no-one could have said that any of them wouldn't have been a worthy winner. Entering their ranks, and eventually making it to heads up, was Mantas Puidokas. The Lithuanian played a tighter game than most making some big folds, at one point folding queens four-handed to Luke Marsh (who held ace-six so we've been told). The preying mantis almost went all the way and even held the lead three-handed but Abou Risk attacked him relentlessly heads up winning nine hands in a row at one point. Abou Risk finally broke the Lithuanian with [jc][6s] to [kh][9h] flopping two-pair and turning a boat for good measure.

Mantas Puidokas and Nick Abou Risk heads up for £50,000

Poker commentator Jesse May had been in Nick Abou Risk's firing line on Day 1 and wasn't surprised that he made it this far: "I had a feeling Nick was going to go a long way. He looked really comfortable at the table and managed to make someone fold kings face-up preflop." To be fair, no-one at the table said it was a good pass at the time but Abou Risk's cultured aggression took him all the way to heads up.

Abou Risk picked out Luke Marsh as the key threat at the table: "Luke started running over the table and I got it in with [as][6s] and he made a big call with king jack." It was a huge turning point that shifted the sands of this tournament, bringing Abou Risk and Marsh back close to even. Had Marsh won that pot he would have around two-thirds of the chips in play with four players left. The term 'walk in the park' springs to mind had he won that pot. Marsh played some fantastic poker and we expect to see more of the young player.

Luke Marsh: roundly regarded as a major threat at the table

Fouth place finisher Joeri Zandvliet came so close to scoring an historic double UKIPT win after claiming the UKIPT Manchester win back in February. It's a boast that hasn't been achieved on the PokerStars European Poker Tour which has 57 separate winners. That monkey remains well and truly on the back of both tours.
Zandvliet is a player that not only has game but also loves his time at the table. This very first UKIPT Edinburgh final table had been a quality one with plenty of three- and four-betting and just as much banter. Max Silver and Joeri Zandvliet were particularly chatty but Silver's tongue got him into trouble when he called for a chop on the river when he was already ahead and the board duly delivered a split. He went out in sixth.

ukipt edinburgh_day 3_joeri zandvliet 3.jpg

Zandvliet's impression must have angered the monkey

Zandvliet's knockout at the hands of Lithuanian Puidokas has done another Lithuanian a big favour. Marius Lietuvninkas looks like he has kept his place at the top of the UKIPT Leaderboard thanks to Zandvliet's failure to bag a second title (which, of course, would have bagged more points for the Dutchman). Check the UKIPT Leaderboard out here - it currently holds the point totals pre-Edinburgh. There are two stops left on the UKIPT; Dublin and London which will have plenty more points up for grabs at the beginning and end of September respectively. There will be no monkey slaying in Edinburgh, Joeri Zandvliet has just been eliminated in 4th place. Mantas Puidokas raised to 125,000 and Zandvliet moved all-in for 960,000. Puidokas sighed, put his head in his hands and agonized over the decision, eventually he quietly announced call.

Puidokas: [7d][7c]
Zandvliet: [4d][4c]

Puidokas even had Zandvliet suit dominated and it only got worse for Zandvliet on the [2d][3h][7h][9h][6h] board. Zandvliet wins £13,100. -- NW

11.02pm: Richard Chadwick eliminated in 5th place winning £10,300
His run of double ups had to end sometime and it has. Chadwick actually had more than when he lost the hand with [As][8s]. He moved his stack of 600,000 in under the gun and was called by Luke Marsh.

Chadwick: [Kd][Jc]
Marsh: [Ah][Qh]

Chadwick got a sweat but he ultimately missed the [2c][6c][7c][10c][4h] board to exit in fifth. -- NW

11pm: Chadwick out in fifth for £10,300

10.50pm: Chadwick down to dust
Richard Chadwick moved all-in under the gun and next to act Mantas Puidokas moved all-in too. Everyone else folded, before the cards were turned over Chadwick turned to his friends and ran his finger across his throat to signal, 'I'm in trouble,' indeed he was.

Chadwick: [As][8s]
Puidokas: [Ad][Ac]

The board of [6c][5c][2c][Jd][Jh] left Chadwick with around 60,000, Puidokas' all-in was for 459,000, so he now has around 975,000. Since this hand Chadwick has doubled up twice and now has around 280,000. -- NW

Details to come.

10.42pm: MONSTER POT
Marsh opened the button for 88,000 and Abou Risk moved all-in for just over one million. Marsh went long into the tank and finally made the call.

Marsh: [ks][jh]
Abou Risk: [as][6s]

If he wins the flip Marsh will have something like two-thirds of the chips in play and be a huge favourite to win. The flip went the other way though with Abou Risk hitting two-pair on a [6d][8c][3d][ad][9s] board. Abou Risk is up to 2,000,000. Game on. -- RD

10.35pm: Broadway for Marsh
Luke Marsh now has around half the chips in play after winning a pot against Joeri Zandvliet. The pot started off slowly enough with Marsh completing from the small blind and Zandvliet checking his option. Marsh fired three bullets of 52,000, 127,000 and 155,000 respectively on a [7d][Kh[Qd][Ad][6c] board and Zandvliet called all three, Marsh's [10c][Jd] winning him the pot. -NW

10.27pm: Marsh turning the screw
Big stack has almost half the chips in play and he is opening and raising liberally. Abou Risk opened to 88,000 and Marsh shoved on him. Abou Risk passed. Marsh opended the next hand from the button and Zandvliet and Abou Risk passed in the blinds. -- RD

10.20pm: Puidokas gets shove happy
Mantas Puidokas has been the most conservative player at the table but he might be finally opening up (a little). Luke Marsh opened under the gun to 88,000 and Puidokas shoved for over 400,000. Marsh took his sweet time before folding and Puidokas tossed [ac][tc] on its back. -- RD

The turn was the [5s] and both players checked, as they did on the [3h] river. Marsh showed [Qc][Jd] to win the pot. -- NW

9.50pm: Break time
That's a 15-minute break.

9.40pm: Max Silver exits in sixth (£8,200)
Max Silver had been short for a little while and had already got it in once against Luke Marsh (and chopped with a straight on board) when he got it in with [ac][td] against Marsh's [ac][3h]. The board ran out a sickening [kc][jh][5h][qh][8h] turning Silver Broadway and rivering Marsh a flush. Silver took it well wishing the other players good luck. Marsh stretches his chip lead. -- RD

9.30pm: Puidokas makes massive laydown
From the button Mantas Puidokas made it 66,000 to go and was three-bet to 146,000 by Luke Marsh from the small blind. Puidokas put in a four-bet to 316,000. Marsh then five-bet jammed all-in. Puidokas looked to the heavens, he had about 645,000 left. Eventually he said fold and showed [Qc][Qd]. -- NW

9.25pm: Abou Risk forced to pass again
Abou Ris's three-betting ways are getting heavily punished at the moment. Marsh opened to 65,000 and was four-bet to 375,000. Abou Risk passed. -- RD

9.15pm: "You're priced in"
According to Richard Chadwick Nick Abou Risk was "priced in" to call when. Chadwick had four-bet shoved for 395,000 over the top of Abou Risk's 134,000 three-bet. Abou Risk did not agree and passed. Chadwick flashed [ah][jd] and is up to 500,000. -- RD

9.10pm: Mantas prayers answered
From under the gun Mantas Puidokas raised to 62,000 and was called by Max Silver from the big blind. On the [Jc][3h][Qd] flop Silver check raised Puidokas all-in and Puidokas called, he was all-in for his last 376,000.

Silver: [Js][9h]
Puidokas: [Kh][Qc]

The turn and river were the [5d][Kd] and Puidokas doubled up, Silver was left with 230,000 after the hand. "I've got one move guys," he said. -- NW

Marsh showed [Ac][10d] to win the pot. -- NW

8.45pm: Zandvliet all-in and at risk
Zandvliet raised the button to 52,000 and Chadwick moved all-in on him. Zandvliet made the call for his 465,000 stack.

Zandvliet: [tc][td]
Chadwick: [qh][5d]

As the cards were flipped Chadwick turned to his railers (and backers, I believe) who were laughing at his hand and flicked his fingers out as if his head had just exploded. Zandvliet's hand held up on the [4h][ac][6s][9c][2s] board to double to 900,000. -- RD

8.42pm: Chadwick in the cut-off
And he raised to 51,000. Silver shoved all-in from the button and picked up a fold. -- RD

ukipt edinburgh_day 3_party.jpg

There were some sore heads after the UKIPT Edinburgh party

8.40pm: Puidokas pushes on
Mantas Puidokas has been the short stack for most of the final table but he just increased his stack by winning a pot against Richard Chadwick. The Lithuanian raised to 57,000 and was flat called by Chadwick from the big blind. On a flop of [2h][As][6d] Chadwick led for 55,000 only for Puidokas to raise to 155,000. Chadwick wasted little time in folding. -- NW

8.30pm:Abou Risk wins one from Silver
From the cut-off Nick Abou Risk made it 52,000 to play and was flat called by Max Silver from the small blind. The flop fell [As][Jc][6h] and Silver check-called a bet of 67,000. Both players checked the turn that was the [3s]. The river was the [10s]. Silver checked, Abou Risk fired 122,000 and after a minute or so Silver made the call. Abou Risk showed [Ad][10h] to win the pot. He's back up to about 2,000,000, Silver has about 450,000. -- NW

8.21pm: Marsh chipping up
Marsh opened the button to 52,000 and was called by Abou Risk in the big blind. The Canadian check-called 65,000 on the [7c][3s][4s] flop and another 155,000 on the [jh] turn. Marsh then shoved for 750,000 on the [5h] river. Abou Risk passed. Marsh is back up to 1,290,000. -- RD

8.14pm: Dangerous Marsh
Max Silver opened for 52,000 and, arguably the tightest player left, Mantas Puidokas three-bet to 122,000 leaving himself 325,000 behind. Whether Marsh wanted action on was just trying to pile on the pressure we won't know but he four-bet to 279,000. Both players passed. Nice pick up for Marsh. -- RD

8.08pm:Abou Risk increases chip lead
Nick Abou Risk has increased his chip lead by winning a small pot from Joeri Zandvliet. The UKIPT Manchester winner completed from the small blind and Abou Risk checked his option. On the [Qs][7d][10c] flop Zandvliet led for 29,000 and was called. On the [Kd] turn Zandvliet shut down and check-folded to Abou Risk's bet of 42,000. -- NW

8.05pm:Abou Risk the aggressor
Nick Abou Risk just four-bet fellow big stack Richard Chadwick off a pot pre-flop the bets went Abou Risk 52,000 from the cut-off, Chadwick 133,000 from the button and Abou Risk 280,000. -- NW

7.55pm: Puidokas back to folding
Either Mantas Puidokas has been getting dealt the most raggy of hands or he's been quietly - and successfully it must be said - climbing the cash ladder. Luke Marsh raised under the gun and Puidokas sat for some time before mucking his hand. -- RD

7.50pm: Silver dodges aces
Max Silver raised from under the gun to 50,000 and the action folded round to Richard Chadwick in the big blind. Chadwick, a recent Maths graduate, three-bet and Silver quickly passed. Chadwick threw down [as][ac]. -- RD

LEVEL UP: BLINDS 12,000-24,000, ante 3,000

7.40pm:Chip counts
Here how the players stack up at the moment Nick Abou Risk is still chip leader.

Seat One: Mantas Puidokas, 560,000
Seat two: Luke Marsh, 737,000

Seat four: Nick Abou Risk, 1,898,000

Nick Abou Risk leads in Edinburgh

7.35pm:Chadwick takes one from Zandvliet
Last hand before the break Joeri Zandvliet lost a chunky pot to Richard Chadwick. Abou Risk c-bet 127,000 on the [2c][jd][5h] flop and Silver called. Both players checked the [kd] turn before Silver led for 226,000. Abou Risk made the call and showed [ks][qc]. Silver looked a bit flustered and said: "I'm glad it's you but I'm annoyed because it's you." Abou Risk is up past 2,000,000. -- RD

7.15pm: Praying Mantas
Mantas Puidokas was left praying for his hand to hold against Zandvliet. The Dutchman raised to 44,000 and Puidokas moved in with [jh][jc] for 274,000. Zandvliet called with [ah][kc] but failed to connect with any of the board. The Lithuanian is up to 570,000. -- RD

7.05pm: Mutual respect
There's a lot of raise and take pre-flop at the moment with few big pots occurring. Most at risk of elimination is Mantas Puidokas who has around 300,000 currently that's still 15 big blinds. -- NW

Silver though raised to 215,000 and Pyefinch gave it up, she's down to around 230,000. -- NW

6.35pm: Chadwick shoves on Abou Risk
The titlse says it all. Nick Abou Risk opened from the small blind and Richard Chadwick moved all-in for 450,000. Abou Risk quickly passed his hand. Chadwick showed [7s][7h]. -- RD

6.30pm: Price of poker going up
These levels are getting really punishing now with just seven players left here at the UKIPT Edinburgh. One of these players is going to win £50,000. Mary Martin was teh last player out. She takes home £4,800 for her final table finish. -- RD

UKIPT Edinburgh Day 3: Levels 20 & 21, blinds 8,000-16,000, ante 2,000

August 22nd, 2010

ukiptthumb.JPG6.25pm: Silver takes one from Abou Risk
In the hand after he doubled up Mantas Puidokas, Max Silver got some of them back. Nick Abou Risk made it 33,000 to go from the hi-jack and Silver three-bet to 88,000. Mantas Puidokas then began to tank and considered what to do with his newly acquired stack of 384,000. After a few minutes in the tank he folded, what he later said was ace-queen, Abou Risk followed suit.

That's the end of the level. Move into the next post.-- NW

6.20pm: Mantas doubles through Max
It folded to Max Silver in the small blind, who asked for a count of Mantas Puidokas stack (185,000) before setting the Lithuanian all-in. Puidokas made a quick call.

Silver: [Qd][9s]
Puidokas: [Kc][Jd]

The board ran out [5s][6h][8h][Kh][Kd], Puidokas doubled to 384,000, Silver slipped to 710,000. -- NW

6.15pm: Marsh doubles through Abou Risk
It's Luke Marsh's turn to double up after Abou Risk check-raised all-in on him on a [jc][ac][tc][8d]. It was a major pot, over 800,000, which was won by Marsh's [ad][qc] over Abou Risk's [as][9c]. -- RD

6.05pm: Marsh doubles up two players
Poor Luke Marsh, in consecutive hands he got in in good and got sucked out on twice.

Hand One:
Marsh raised to 35,000 from under the gun+1 and was called by Max Silver from the big blind. On the [Jc][7h][3s] flop Silver checked to Marsh who bet 46,000. Silver check-raised all-in for 338,000 total and Marsh called.

Marsh: [Qd][Jd]
Silver: [9h][8h]

The turn was the [Ks] but the [10h] river completed Silver's straight.

Hand Two: The next hand Marsh raised to 35,000 from under the gun and Chadwick moved all-in for 258,000 from the button and Marsh called.

Marsh: [6d][6h]
Chadwick: [Ac][Ks]

The board ran out [4c][Kc][Js][2d][2c], Marsh is down to around 590,000 after those two double ups. -- NW

5.50pm: Bad news for Martin
Mary Martin is our first final table casualty after shoving from the cut-off for 120,000 with [ah][ts]. Zandvliet called from the button with [as][kh]. The flop killed off Martin's chances of a suckout as the board ran out [6h][kd][6d][qs][3s]. Zandvliet is up to 1,200,000. -- RD

5.45pm: First one to Marsh
On the first hand of the final table Luke Marsh raised to 36,000 on the button and was called by Mary Martin from the big blind. On the flop of [4d][8s][4h] Martin check-folded to a bet of 32,000 from Marsh. Martin is now the short stack at the table with 129,000. -- NW

5.35pm: Final table profiles
Players are back in their seats and UKIPT host Nick Wealthall is just introducing the final eight players. Cue round of applause. Here's a quick review of the payouts structure:

1. £50,000 (plus £5,000 EPT London seat)
2. £27,700
3. £17,600
4. £13,100
5. £10,300
6. £8,200
7. £6,300
8. £4,800

Seat one: Mantas Puidokas, 22 Lithuania ,159000
This semi-pro player is a proud Lithuanian and is sporting a black Lithuanian polo shirt today. He says he's quite new to the game having only been playing for 18 months. He's a student and plays tournaments online and his biggest win to date is $10,000 on PokerStars. Puidokas is almost two metres tall and so it comes as no surprise that he likes to play basketball in his spare time.

ukipt edinburgh_day 3_mantas.jpg

Mantas Puidokas

Seat two: Luke Marsh, 21, Scunthorpe, UK - 1,287,000
Luke Marsh has recently turned professional after leaving university to pursue a poker career. He plays mostly online but his best result to date is a chunky £55,000 live cash at Dusk till Dawn in Nottingham. Marsh won a World Cup sweepstake in Killarney to win a seat to Dublin where he'll be looking to have another deep run.

ukipt edinburgh_day 3_luke marsh.jpg

Luke Marsh

Seat three: Suzanne Pyefinch, Great Yarmouth, UK, PokerStars qualifier - 478,000
Suzanne Pyefinch knows she's going to win the UKIPT Edinburgh. Why? Because her friend, a witch no less, told her that she had a premonition that she would win and would have to fold aces heads up. Is there such thing as spiritual collusion? An enthusiastic amateur Pyefinch is a mergers and acquisitions analyst by day who has recently upped her live play to take in a lot more tournaments and by this result it seems to be going fairly well.

ukipt edinburgh_day 3_suzanne pyefinch.jpg

Suzanne Pyefinch

Seat four: Mary Martin, 41, Edinburgh, UK, 165,000
Mary is the local lass done good in this tournament. She lives in Edinburgh and is a full-time Mum looking after her three kids; Holly, 11, David, 9 and Ellie age 4. Martin's biggest poker achievement to date is winning an amateur poker title in July 2008 (she was the first female winner) she's now looking to become the first female to win a UKIPT event. She's the second shortest stack coming into the final table but wherever she finishes this will be her biggest cash ever. Martin once did a parachute jump from 10,000 feet for a Leukemia charity.

ukipt edinburgh_day 3_mary martin.jpg

Mary Martin

Seat five: Joeri Zandvliet, 21, Utrecht, Netherlands, PokerStars qualifier, 1,092,000
The potential monkey killer in the field today Zandvliet is looking to become the first repeat winner on the UKIPT having won the Manchester leg in February this year for £63,200. He's a student who is studying Urban Planning. During the World Cup Zandvliet was travelling in the USA and says he had a lot of fun supporting the Dutch football team. Zandvliet is always laughing at the table and he may well finish today top of the UKIPT and be laughing all the way to the bank with the winner of the leaderboard getting buy-ins and hotel for every event of season two of the UKIPT leaderboard. By our reckoning he needs to finish second or better to top the leaderboard.

ukipt edinburgh_day 3_joeri zandvliet 2.jpg

Joeri Zandvliet

Seat six: Nick Abou Risk, 25, Canada, PokerStars qualifier, 1,917,000
Originally from Canada, Nick Abou Risk currently resides in Dublin. He's the clear chip leader entering the final table and has been well stacked all tournament having been chip leader of Day 1B. He's been playing seriously for three years and now considers himself semi-pro. He first started off by playing $5 sit and gos on PokerStars. As long as Abou Risk is not first out at the final table he'll record his biggest lifetime cash. On day one he was sat next to Liv Boeree and Jesse May who described Abou Risk as a 'terror and a destroyer.'

ukipt edinburgh_day 3_abou risk.jpg

Nick Abou Risk

Seat seven: Richard Chadwick, 22, Edinburgh, UK - 294,000
Chadwick aka chadders0 has been backed into this event by players on the "+" forum and he's proved to be quite a success. Given that he considers "live for fun, online for profitability" he may have to rethink his poker working mantra. The Scot paid his way through his final year at University by playing $20 heads up SNGs on PokerStars and plays Battlefield 2 to unwind.

ukipt edinburgh_day 3_richard chadwick.jpg

Richard Chadwick

Seat eight: Max Silver, 20, Dublin, Ireland- 383,000
Max is a 20-year old marketer who has recently moved to Dublin from the UK. Mainly an online player, this final table will be is his best result to date by some length. Max travelled over to Edinburgh with one of his colleagues, none other than fellow final table player Nicholas Abou Risk who is the current chip leader with close to two million chips.

4.38pm: Mary Martin's biggest fan
A big shout out to Mary Martin's dad Alan who is railing her at home through the PokerStars blog, "He's my biggest fan," said Martin. -- NW

4.35pm: Owen Robinson eliminated in ninth place
There will be no repeat UKIPT final table appearance for Owen Robinson. The Irishman was just eliminated by Nicholas Abou Risk in cruel circumstances. Abou Risk made it 33,000 from early position and from the big blind Robinson moved all-in for around 290,000 and Abou Risk called.

Robinson: [Ad][Qc]
Abou Risk: [Ah][10c]

The board ran out [10s][8s][Jc][4c][As]

Robinson wins £3,400 for his efforts. Players are now on a one hour break before the final table commences. -- NW

4.28pm: No Pye in Zandvliet's face
Suzanne Pyefinch raised from the cut-off to 32,000 and was called by Joeri Zandvliet on the button. Richard Chadwick thought long and hard about the squeeze but settled on folding. Pye led another 32,000 into the [qc][kh][8h] flop and Zandvliet called. A perfect bluffing card appeared with the [ah] and Pyefinch check-folded to a 68,000 bet from the Dutchman. -- RD

LEVEL UP: BLINDS 8000-16,000, ante 2,000

4.19pm: Mary Martin doubles up
From under the gun Joeri Zandvliet raised to 26,000, it folded to Mary Martin in the big blind who moved all-in for 87,000 total, Zandvliet made the call.

Martin: [Kc][5c]
Zandvliet: [Ks][Qc]

The flop was [8c][6c][4d], "that's a funky flop," said Zandvliet. The turn was the [4c] making Martin her flush and the river was the [3d]. Martin is now up to 187,000, Zandvliet has 1,025,000. -- NW

4.15pm: Abou Risk turning up the pressure
Nicholas Abou Risk has been the most aggressive player nine-handed so far with a couploe of three-bets and now a check-raise into an under the gun raiser. Richarda Chadwick opened for 25,000 as first to act and was called by Abou Risk in the big blind. Chadwick followed up with a 27,000 bet on the [js][9h][kc] flop and Abou Risk dropped the hammer with a check-raise to 77,000. Chadwick grimaced and mucked. -- RD

4.05pm: Yawn Tension building at UKIPT final table
The last few hands have been raise and take with Luke Marsh, Owen Robinson and Abou Risk being the main (small) winners. -- RD

4pm: Girl on girl action
Mary Martin and Suzanne Pyefinch just played two pots in a row. In the first Martin raised under the gun to 26,000 and was called by Pyefinch from the big blind. Both players checked the [10c][Qd][9c] flop. On the [9s] turn Pyefinch bet 25,000 and Martin called. The [Ah] fell on the river and Pyefinch bet 30,000 and Martin folded. The second was a simple raise and take with Pyefinch raising to 32,00 from the small blind and Martin folding. Pyefinch showed the [Ad] "I don't want to knock you out, you're a girl," said Pyefinch to Martin. "Soft play again?'"quipped Max Silver. "I told you I'm going to be the first female winner {of the UKIPT},' added Pyefinch. -- NW

ukipt edinburgh_day 3_mary martin.jpg

Mary Martin at the UKIPT Edinburgh

3.55pm: Mary, Mary, quite contrary
Mary Martin is playing a quiet and considered game allowing the big stacks around her to get involved. Probably a sensible strategy all things considered. Richard Chadwick has taken the other approach and has raised the last two pots. He took the blinds in one and passsed to a Max Silver shove in the other. -- RD

3.50pm: Cagey action
It's feeling like a Mexican stand-off at the moment and nobody wants to be the one to make a mistake so close to the big money. Joeri Zandvliet has opened two pots to 26,000 from late position winning one and passing to a three-bet from Abou Risk on the other. -- RD

3.45pm: Robinson gets one through
Owen Robinson raised to 26,000 pre-flop and was called by Nicholas Abou Risk from the big blind. Robinson's c-bet of 36,00 on a [Ad][2s][Kc] was good enough to win the pot. -- NW

3.30pm: (Almost) Final table seat draw and chip counts
Mantas Puidokas showed up seconds before the Cody and Lovett knock outs.

Seat 1: Mantas Puidokas, 252,000
Seat 2: Luke Marsh, 1,175,000
Seat 3: Owen Robinson, 208,000
Seat 4: Suzanne Pyefinch, 523,000
Seat 5: Mary Martin, 187,000
Seat 6: Joeri Zandvliet, 1,181,000
Seat 7: Nick Abou Risk, 1,533,000
Seat 8: Richard Chadwick, 439,000
Seat 9: Max Silver, 242,000

3.20pm: Lovett's cooler
How the chips didn't go in earlier I don't know. Nicholas Abou Risk opened the action from the hijack and Steve Lovett called on the button. Abou Risk fired 35,000 at the wet [ac][qd][ks] flop and Lovett called. Abou Risk led out for 80,000 on the [5h] turn. Lovett, up out of his chair, appeared to do a little Hollywooding before calling. A blank [9h] dropped on the river and Abou Risk quietly announced that he was all-in. Lovett called.

Abou Risk: [ad][as]
Lovett: [kc][kd]

Quite some cooler six-handed. Lovett goes out in tenth for £2,600. -- RD

ukipt edinburgh_day 3_steve lovett.jpg

Set over set cooler for Steve Lovett

3.16pm: Cody out
EPT winner Jake Cody is out in 11th. Suzanne Pyefinch raised to 28,000 and Cody shoved with ace-jack for 220,000. Pyefinch called with aces, as you would, and Cody couldn't get that magical 8% outdraw. Pyefinch chips up to 500,000. -- RD

ukipt edinburgh_day 2_jake cody 2.jpg

Jake Cody ran into aces

3.15pm: (Almost) final table
There have been two quick eliminations Jake Cody and Steven Lovett are the two to miss out, details to come. We're down to nine. One more player to go before the actual final table. -- NW

3.10pm: Early pot for Martin
Mary Martin has won the first hand of the day at her table she raised to 24,000 and was called by Nicholas Abou Risk. On the flop of [9d][6d][9h] she continuation bet and Abou Risk folded. -- NW

3.05pm: Mantas MIA
Mantas Puidokas is yet to show for day three, he was one of the shortest stacks coming back with just 277,000. Puidokas is from Lithuania and we're a little concerned there's been a breakdown in communication, tournament staff are trying to track him down as we speak. - NW

2.50pm: Players getting ready for the final push
Action is set to start at 3pm with 11 players left in the £500 main event. We have three chip leaders that will be looking to put pressure on the shorts stacks and they are Joeri Zandvliet, Luke Marsh and Nicholas Abou Risk. Check the chip counts and the payouts page. -- RD

Can Joeri Zandvliet win his second UKIPT title?

Kings and monkeys: Joeri Zandvliet leads UKIPT Edinburgh

August 21st, 2010

ukiptthumb.JPGThere is an evil monkey that is alive and well on the European Poker Tour and it's been sitting on the back of all 58 EPT winners. Not one single EPT winner has managed to claim a second title in just over six seasons of the premier poker tour. The UKIPT could well be killing that monkey before it even gets a chance to peel a banana thanks to Joeri Zandvliet. The Dutchman won UKIPT Manchester in February over Valentines day weekend and goes into Day 3 here as chip leader with 1,204,000.

* The monkey is in no way related to this evil monkey, but to all extents and purposes probably wouldn't be a million miles away from it either.

ukipt edinburgh_day 2_joeri zandvliet.jpg

Joeri Zandvliet: can he do the double?

Zandvliet may be top of the chip stacks at the moment but he's not far ahead of Luke Marsh (1,146,000) and Nicholas Abou Risk (1,018,000). These three players all won pots over 500,000 involving pockets kings. Marsh got his monster pot against James McTaggart's pocket queens and Abou Risk had fired for three big streets of value against Marsh's top-pair top-kicker. Zandvliet had James Williams make a five-bet shove on him with [qh][5h] when he held the cowboys. It was a moment that entirely changed the dynamic of the table admitted Zandvliet: "That hand against James (Williams) was crucial, it took me from 400,000 to 700,000 and changed a lot." That it did. It gave the Dutchman enough chips to take shots against shorter stacks and he knocked out a couple of players who three-bet shoved into him, despatching Joe Whittaker in 13th with a weak ace and Sam Holden in 12th with king-queen.

ukipt edinburgh_day 2_nicholad abou risk.jpg

Nicholas Abou Risk: Day 1B chip leader stayed the course

ukipt edinburgh_day 2_luke marsh.jpg

Luke Marsh: first player to break the million chip barrier

The rest of the field trying to elbow their way onto the final table is Steve Lovett (451,000), Suzanne Pyefinch (344,000), Richard Chadwick (335,000), Max Silver (291,000), Mantas Puidokas (277,000), Jake Cody (235,000), Mary Martin (220,000) and Owen Robinson (218,000). There's been some very solid play and the final table is shaping up to be a stormer. Jake Cody is a well known figure following his EPT win at Deauville in January for €847,000 and this will be his first UKIPT final table (if he makes it) following a deep run in Coventry.

ukipt edinburgh_day 2_jake cody 2.jpg

Jake Cody has experience in pressue situations

Another one of the shorter stacks who will be a real threat if he can get some chips is Owen Robinson, our fourth place finisher at UKIPT Nottingham. Robinson and Zandvliet are both high on the UKIPT leaderboard and have put themselves in a great position to top the board. Other leaderboard challengers played this tournament, including the one-two combo of Marius Lietuvninkas (157.3 points) and Mike Hill (151.5), but none except Robinson (121.1) and Zandvliet (97.5) made a real impact. Check the leaderboard here.

The EPT champion is looking to make his first UKIPT final table

11.46pm: Double up for Puidokas marks the end of play
On the last hand of the night Mantas Puidokas doubled through Richard Chadwick with pocket fives to ace-eight. We have 11 players left. The chip lead is currently contested three ways between Joeri Zandvliet, Luke Marsh and Nicholas Abou Risk. Full chip counts and wrap to come. -- RD

11.46pm: Last four hands of the day
Tournament director Toby Stone has announced the last four hands of the day. -- RD

11.45pm: Zandvliet scalps another
Joeri Zandvliet has claimed another tournament life and it's Sam Holden this time. Zandvliet opened for 21,500 and Holden shipped it in for 170,000. Zandvliet made the call with [kd][qs] against Holden's [ad][kc]. The Dutchman needed help and got it when he turned the nuts on a [jd][td][2s][as][6h] board. Tough break for Holden as Zandvliet approaches the million chip mark. -- RD

ukipt edinburgh_day 2_sam holden.jpg

Sam Holden's dominating ace couldn't keep him in the tournament

11.38pm: Whittaker out
Joe Whittaker had been shifting his chips well but this proved to be one ship too many. Zandvliet had made it 26,000 and Whittaker shifted for 200,000. Zandvliet made the call with [ah][7d] and Whittaker's [kc][9d] needed to hit. No joy for Whittaker and Zandvliet is up to 800,000. -- RD

11.30pm: Whittaker doubles again
His [As][Jd] spiked a jack on the river against Joeri Zandvliet's pocket sevens, Whittaker has around 200,000 now, whist Zandvliet slips to around 700,000. -- NW

11.20pm: Michael Leedham eliminated in 14th place
He shoved for 15 big blinds from the cut-off with [Ac][7h] and was called by Max Silver on the button with [Ah][Ks] and despite Silver saying he could feel a seven coming the board ran out, [Kc][10h][9h][2s][6d], with Mary Martin saying, "I folded pocket tens." Silver is up to 400,000. --NW

11.15pm: Kings again!
It's pocket kings again as Luke Marsh gets it in against James Rann's big slick. Rann couldn't find a bullet and goes out in 15th. Marsh is back near the million chip mark. -- RD

ukipt edinburgh_day 2_james rann.jpg

James Rann's ace-king failed to hit the target

11.12pm: Cody and Whittaker double through Chadwick
Two of the shorter stacks have been helped out by Richard Chadwick. Joe Whittaker (90,000) and Jake Cody (270,000) have both doubled through Chadwick. -- RD

11.05pm: Abou Risk shows kings
Nicholas Abou Risk was last night's chip leader and he hasn't stopped the aggression since. Abou Risk three-bet Marsh preflop before betting 67,500 into the [qs][6h][6s] flop. Marsh called. Abou Risk fired another 111,500 at the [5h] turn and Marsh called. A final 167,500 on the river was also called. Marsh showed [as][qh] and Abou Risk [kd][ks]. Huge pot for Abou Risk. -- RD

11pm: McTaggart out as Marsh breaks million barrier
It's quite a cooler for McTaggart. The Scotsman opened and was three-bet by Marsh to 40,000. McTaggart four-bet to 120,000 and then called all-in when Marsh shipped it all into the middle.

Marsh: [ks][kh]
McTaggart: [qc][qh]

The board blanked out as Marsh pushed into a 1.2m chip lead. -- RD

10.55pm: Cody doubles up Puidokas
Jake Cody was still un-racking his chips when he called Marius Pudokas all-in bet of 116,000. Cody had [Ad][Jd], Pudokas [10h][10d], Pudokas improved on a [10s][3h][2c][Kd][Ah] board to double through to 220,000. Cody is down to 160,000. -- NW

10.50pm: State of Play
With the elimination of Jimmy White we're down to 16 and two tables. When Owen Robinson saw it was his table that was breaking he let out a 'Yes,' before adding, 'That was the table of death.' Tablemate Max Silver quipped, 'It was horrible playing with you.' Here's how the last two tables pan out and the chip stacks of those still in:

Table One:

Jake Cody: 150,000*
Joeri Zandvliet: 910,000
Sam Holden: 150,000

*Details on two hands involving these to come. -- NW

10.45pm: White out, down to final 16
Jimmy White has just been knocked out in 16th after a blind on blind tussle that saw him table [ts][th] to Nicholas Abou Risk's [jh][js]. White raised to 19,500 from the small blind, Abou Risk made it 42,500 from the big before the inevitable 130,000 jam and call. White failed to catch an out but does take away £1,700 - not bad for online qualification. Whiet said to us: "I started the day with 20,000 so I'm pretty happy with how things went." Well played, sir.

We're now down to two tables of eight. Table draw to come. -- RD

10.35pm: McTaggart doubles through Whittker
Whittaker had completed from the small blind and McTaggart had checked his option. All the money went in on a [8][2][2] flop Whittaker had [8][6], McTaggart [Jc][8c]. After the hand McTaggart was up to 380,000, Whittaker was left with 55,000. -- NW

10.30pm: Holden holds on
Sam Holden shoved the button with [jh][ts] and was called in the big blind by Mantas Puidokas with [ah][qs]. The flop put Holden ahead with [th][5s][2c] but the [6h] gave the Lithuanian a lot more outs. A flash of red on the river gave Holden a moment of panic but the [kd] was safe enough to double him up. -- RD

10.25pm: Luke Marsh new chip leader
He did it by winning a pot against Owen Robinson. Marsh raised the button to 18,000 and Robinson called from the small blind. They checked all the way to the river on a [Ks][4c][6d][2h][9c] board, before Marsh bet 32,000 and Robinson called. Marsh showed [Kh][10d] to win the pot and now has around 770,000. -- NW

Luke Marsh has swiped the chip lead with a 770,000 stack

10.15pm: Martin catches the bluff
Mary Martin was left dwelling whether to call a 53,500 bet on the river of a [5d][8d][7s][4c][qs] board. Jimmy White had made the bet, almost a third of his stack, and Martin eventually made the call. White tapped teh table and mucked his hand. Martin turned over bottom two with [4h][5c]. She was still arranging her stack when we left but she looks like she must be approaching 300,000. -- RD

10.10pm: Marsh challenging for the chip lead
Luke Marsh just padded his stack moving all-in over the top of Joe Whittaker's 70,500 bet on a [6d][4d][7c] flop. Whittaker folded leaving himself 230,000 behind, Marsh is up to around 700,000 -- NW

10.05pm: Williams clears it up
Things are fairly hectic here and occasionally we have to rely on anecdotal reporting of hands (i.e. from fellow bloggers) and the info just wasn't right on the hand we reported regarding James Williams' exit - not a million miles off but I digress.

Williams, who is still looking a little shell shocked about his knockout just collared me to settle the facts as he "didn't want to look like a fish." A top 20 finish should have answered that anyway but here goes. Zandvliet opened to 13,000 from the cut-off and Williams three-bet to 31,000 from the small blind. Zandvliet then made it 73,000 at which point Williams, knowing that he would get three-bet with a wide range, jammed for 310,000. Zandvliet had pocket kings and Williams, who held [qh][5h], said: "I just wished I'd done it with a suited ace. I would have got there." Well, at least he's got the promise of a pint of Guinness from me should he make it to UKIPT Dublin. -- RD

10pm: Leedham has respect
Michael Leedham is in good shape right now third in chips with 18 left, but he obviously has respect for Jake Cody and Joe Whittaker, recently tweeting. "Will be down to 2 tables soon and need to hope neither joejoe or cody get put on my left." -- NW

9.55pm: Chip Counts
We've updated the chip count page, the top five with 18 remaining are:

Joeri Zandvliet: 708,000
Luke Marsh: 588.500
Richard Chadwick: 537,000
Michael Leedham: 450,000
Joe Whittaker: 435,000

Shortest stack belongs to Sam Holden who has 110,000. -- NW

9.50pm: Joeri Zandvliet leads the UKIPT Edinburgh
The players are back from the break and Dutchman Joeri Zanvliet is leading with 700,000 but has Luke Marsh is close on his heels with 588,500. Action set to restart in moments. -- RD

UKIPT Edinburgh Day 2: Levels 16 & 17, blinds 3,000-6,000, ante 500

August 21st, 2010

ukiptthumb.JPG9.40pm: Break
We've got a 15-minute break as we go into the final stage of the day. There's 18 players left spread across three six-handed tables. -- RD

9.39pm: Zandvliet bursts into chip lead
Here's the hand that saw Joeri Zandvliet win a huge 660,000 pot and take the chip lead with 700,000.Both Zandvliet and James Williams had been active players at the table so the dynamics of this hand are pretty understandable.

Zandvliet had opened the action to around 13,000 from late position and Williams had made a small three-bet to just 31,000 from the small blind. Zandvliet then four-bet to 73,000 and Williams decided to ask the ultimate question (that means he moved all-in, not threatened nuclear war). Williams' 310,000 all-in was snapped off by Zandvliet who tabled pocket kings. Williams showed [qh][5h]. A flopped gutshot for Williams never got there as Zandvliet grabbed the chip lead of the tournament. -- RD

ukipt edinburgh_day 2_joeri zandvliet.jpg

9.35pm: Two small hands
Hand One: Steve Lovett (big blind) and Nicholas Abou Risk (cut-off) saw a flop of [Ah][8c][4h] and Abou Risk bet 17,500 into a 35,000 pot and Lovett called. Both players checked the [6d] on the turn. Lovett fired 44,000 on the [4s] river and Abou Risk gave it up.

Hand Two: From under the gun Owen Robinson made it 14,500, the Irishman has been moved to the same table as Jake Cody and Joe Whittaker, but it was big blind Luke Marsh who looked him up from the big blind. Robinson fired two bullets on the [5h][Ks][2h][2c] board, Marsh calling the first of 18,000 but folding to the 40,000 turn bet. -- NW

9.30pm: Zandvliet bursts into chip lead
UKIPT Manchester winner Joeri Zandvliet has just won a 700,000 pot to take the chip lead. Details to come. -- RD

9.20pm: No action for Mary's monster
Mary Martin had hit a monster board with [qh][qc][th][ts] flop with [qd][td] but just couldn't get anyone to come along with her. She's short but only a double up away from getting back into things here. -- RD

9.18pm: Chadwick takes a pot from Pyefinch
Suzanne Pyefinch raised under the gun to 15,000 from under the gun. From the cut-off Richard Chadwick made it 43,000. Pyefinch folded, she's down to 310,000 and Chadwick has 410,000. - NW

9.15pm: Cody catches the river
Jake Cody just doubled through Max Silver. From the cut-off Silver made it 13,000 to go and Cody three-bet to 28,000. Silver asked Cody how much he had (136,000 total) and moved all-in, Cody called quickly.

Cody: [Ac][Js]
Silver [4h][4d]

The board made Cody wait [9s][10c][6c][5d][Jd], "I'm a bit surprised at the speed of you call," said Silver. "I think a worse line would be three-betting then deciding," said Joe Whittaker. -- NW

9.10pm: Richard Callaghan out out in 22nd
Richard Callaghan has just exited in 22nd after getting it in against Luke Marsh with [kd][jd]. The short stack was horribly dominated with [as][kh] and when an ace dropped on the flop he was as good as out. And out he did go. There are 21 players left in the field and we'll be playing down to a final table or ten levels have been played, whichever comes first. Marsh is now challenging for the chip lead with 440,000.

Owen Robinson has just been moved tables to balance for Callaghan's exit and is two seats to the right of Jake Cody, who himself is on the right of Joe Whittaker. -- RD

9.02pm: Chip counts
I've cast my eye over the three remaining tables and have chip counts for those who remain, Joe Whittaker appears to be chip leader with 450,000. I'm in the process of updating the chip count page. -- NW

ukipt edinburgh_day2_joe whittaker chip leader.jpg

Smile Joe, you've got the chip lead

9pm: Robinson runs Rann and Leedham off a hand
Owen Robinson had lost some chips back (we missed how) but he just got some back after three-betting to 44,000 over a 15,000 bet by James Rann, which had been flat called by Michael Leedham, both players folded to Robinson's bet. He's now on 270,000, Leedham has 370,000 and Rann has 250,000.- NW

8.50pm: Those that will not make the final table
Players that have fallen in the last couple of levels include:

24. Martin Mulsow, Germany, £1,500
25. Adam Small, UK, £1,300

8.40pm: Jimmy White makes the double
Jimmy White has just scored a vital double through to keep himself alive in this tournament. Owen Robinson had opened to 15,000 and White jammed for 120,000. Robinson called.

White: [8s][8d]
Robinson: [as][ks]

The board ran out [6h][qh][6c][4h][9h] and White doubles through to 240,000. Robinson is on a similar amount. -- RD

LEVEL UP: BLINDS 3000-6000, ante 500

8.30pm: Robinson eliminates Adam, in small pot
Owen Robinson has increased his stack to 360,000 by eliminating Adam Small. Robinson held aces and raised and then called Small's three-bet shove of 70,000, by the river there was a chance of a split pot but Robinson faded the chop and is now second in chips. -- NW

ukipt edinburgh_day2_owen robinson2.jpg

Robinson is closing in on his second UKIPT final table

8.25pm: Williams wins one
James Williams told me about a hand between himself and Suzanne Pyefinch saying, "I sucked out on the river and now she hates me," Williams made two pair eight and fives on the river against Pyefinch's top pair (she held king-nine) to win a pot of roughly 80,000. Shortly afterward Williams four-bet jammed pre-flop and got no action, his stack is approaching 300,000. -- NW

8.20pm: Robinson beats down Lovett again
Steve Lovett had obviously got fed up of Owen Robinson's continuous three-betting when the following pot took place. Lovett had opened for 13,000 and Robinson has repopped it to 29,000. Lovett took a large stack of blue and yellow chips (5,000 and 1,000 respectively) and raised to 92,000. Robinson quietly announced that he was all-in for 79,000 more. Lovett counted his chips, got to the total of 190,000 and opted to fold his hand. Robinson's up to around 270,000. -- RD

8pm: Lovett gets value on the river
Steve Lovett just won a three way pot with a nice river bet. Lovett, Michael Leedham and Jimmy White all reached the river of a [10d][Qd][6h][5c][Qs] board with about 37,000 in the pot. Lovett was first to act and bet 8,000. Leedham folded quickly but White made the call. Lovett announced "two pair," and showed [5h][3c] to win the pot. -- NW

8.10pm: Maudlin getting active
Max Silver opened to 11,000 and Dave Maudlin three-bet to 37,000 from the small blind. Silver passed. This obviously wasn't enough for Maudlin who moments later check-raised all-in over Richard Callaghan's bet on the turn of a [3h][6c][qs][jd] board. Callaghan passed and Maudlin is up to 200,000. -- RD

8.05pm: Robinson beats down Lovett
Steve Lovett opedn form late position to 12,000 and was three-bet from the blinds to 30,000 by Owen Robinson. Both players checked the [5d][jd][3d] flop but Robinson took the opportunity to lead 40,000 at the [2c]. Lovett folded the [as] face up. Robinson is back over 200,000. -- RD

8pm: Joe Whittaker doubles through Jake Cody
Those two are trading the chip lead back and forth between themselves. Still as they're sat side by side the chips don't have far to move. In the hand in question Antony Wolsey shoved all-in for about eight big blinds, Cody flat called on the button and then Joe Whittaker moved all-in from the small blind and Cody called the pot was 560,000. Whittaker had pocket nines, Cody ace-king and Wolsey pocket twos. Although Cody flopped a king, Whittaker flopped a third nine and won a massive pot. Cody now has 170,000 and Whittaker 560,000. -- NW

7.40pm: Lucky Joeri
Suck-out alert, UKIPT Manchester winner Joeri Zandvliet just doubled through Martin Mulsow and it wasn't pretty. Zandvliet opened from early position, Mulsow three-bet to around 35,000 on the button, Zandvliet shoved all-in for 147,000 and Mulsow called.

Mulsow: [Qs][Qh]
Zandvliet: [Ks][7d]

The board ran out [Kc][4h][5d][10h][As], "Better lucky than good," said Zandvliet who is up to 300,000. Mulsow has 42,500 after the hand. Chip counts are now available here.-- NW

7.37pm: Chip counts
Fresh chip counts are in. We're catchinig up with the last few knockouts and will post a link here when that's done. -- RD

7.37pm: How Cody became chip leader
Jake Cody is the chip leader with 360,000 as level 16 gets underway. He went on a rush in the last few hands of level 15 to go from 100,000 to his current standing. Joe Whittaker, who is at Cody's table, told us that first he doubled Cody up with [Q][10] against Cody's [Q][9] on a [9][8][6] flop and then Cody took some off of Laurence Paisley with a trickily played pair of aces. -- NW

7.35pm: Back from dinner
Jake Cody is chip leader as we come back for the seventh level of the day. The EPT winner is sat on a huge 360,000 stack. Chip counts are being updated. -- RD

That's it for one hour as the players depart to the bar/outside world to fill their stomachs (or not as the case may be). -- RD

6.30pm: Small takes big scalp
Keith 'The Camel' Hawkins has just been eliminated, Adam Small the man who took him out. Small opened from under the gun, Hawkins shoved from the button and Small called. Hawkins' all-in was for around 14 big blinds, as it was 56,000 total.

Small: [7c][7s]
Hawkins: {5d][5s]

The board ran out [As][4d][Qc][Kh][9h] the stacks were reasonably even, close enough for the tournament staff to count down Hawkins' stack before it was established that Small did have him covered. -- NW

The Camel cashed in Edinburgh

6.28pm: Jimmy White snookers Keith Hawkins
Steve Lovett opened to 13,000 from middle position and was three-bet by Keith Hawkins to 31,000 from the hi-jack. It folded to Jimmy White in the big blind who moved all-in. Lovett folded, Hawkins asked for a count and it was 26,900 more to call and he did indeed call.

Hawkins: [Ac][9s]
White: [Ad][Ah]

The board ran out: [8c][4h][7c][8s][7s] with Hawkins saying, "That's about the worst hand I could have in that spot. -- NW

6.25pm: Lefew on Lefew
Ben Lefew is one of our most recent knockouts and had some 150,000 before he got knocked out. Lefew explained the hand: "I limped in the small blind with an ace. I flopped it and then fired three barrells. My opponent shoved the river and I thought it was good spot for him to bluff." It wasn't and Lefew admits that he made a mistake, always the side of a good player. On the upside the man from Chicago now has the time to explore Edinburgh before flying home. -- RD

6.20pm: More bust outs
Here are our most recent KO's. They all played well but none of them will be our first UKIPT Edinburgh winner.

39. Ben Lefew, USA, PokerStars qualifier, £1,000
40. Peter Falkenberger, PokerStars qualifier, £1,000
41. David Iftakhar, UK, £900
42. Gordon Anderson, UK, £900
43. Peter Donoghue, UK, £900
44. Conor Ainsworth, Ireland, £900
45. William Paxton, UK, £900

48. Karsten Vogt, Germany, PokerStars qualifier, £900
49. Andrew Hedley, UK, £800
50. Andrew Clayton, UK, PokerStars qualifier, £800

There's plenty of aggression in this tournament so more players will surely bust before dinner break in 15 minutes. -- RD

6.05pm: Whittaker wastes no time
Joe Whittaker has just been moved to the direct right of Jake Cody and Whittaker wasted little time in tangling with the EPT Deauville winner. Cody opened to 9,200 from under the gun and Whittaker popped it to 17,300. It folded back to Cody, who had around 80,000 back, he tanked for a long time before folding. Whitaker is up to 420,000. -- NW

5.50pm: Michael Leedham doubles up
I joined the action on the turn of a [Ad][6h][Qh][6c] board, there was 35,000 in the pot and is was on Mary Martin to act, she was under the gun+1 and she bet 25,000. Her only opponent in the hand was Michael Leedham, who was on the button. Leedham moved all-in for 120,000 total and Martin then tanked for several minutes before saying, "This is probably a bad call, but I call."

Martin: [As][Js]
Leedham: [Ah][Qc]

The river was inconsequential and Leedham doubled up to 275,000 whilst Martin slips to 80,000. -- NW

5.45pm: One plane and one taxi
Ben Lefew is continuing to chip up and looks more than happy about it. We caught up with Lefew to find out why he qualified for this tourney. "PokerStars is the cheapest way to travel," said Lefew who aimed for UKIPT Edinburgh because he wanted to visit Scotland. He added: "If I bust out I can see the city and if I'm still in, well, that's a good problem to have."

It's wasn't Lefew that was involved in the next action at his table though. David Iftakhar shoved from the button for 20,000 with [th][4h] and was called by Sam Holden called in the big blind with [qs][6h]. The board ran out a paint-heavy [ks][qs][kd][jd][5c] knocking Iftakhar out for a £900 payday. Holden is up to 100,000. -- RD

LEVEL UP: BLINDS 2,000-4,000, ANTE 400

5.35pm: Huge double up for James Rann
He opened under the gun to 7,500 and was called by Peter Donoghue who was next to act, everyone else folded. The flop was [7d][As][10s], Rann checked to Donoghue who bet 12,000. Rann check raised to 28,500 total and was called. On the [9c] turn Rann moved all-in for 81,800 total and Donoghue called.

Rann: [10h][10c]
Donoghue: [Qs][9s]

The river was the [5h] and Rann doubled up to over 235,000. -- NW

5.25pm: And Channing is out
Neil Channing is out and won't be winning back to back tournaments (he won his most recent UK tournament) after getting it in with [tc][jc] against Richard Chadwick's [ad][5d]. Chadwick limped the blind and Channing shoved for 49,400. Chadwick made the call and they both flopped large with [kc][td][7d]. Chadwick went a long way ahead with a turn of [jd] but Channing's two-pair was still in contention to fill up.. but didn't. -- RD

5.15pm: The Channing Show
Neil Channing is loudly chatting away (still) and can be heard at most of the six remaining tables. Old school friend Keith Hawkins has just joined Owen Robinson's table and the Irishman asked him: "Does Neil know that this isn't going on TV?" Hawkins replied: "It's like the Truman show, we're all just bit players to Neil." -- RD

5.10pm: Young, talented, chipped up and sat in a row
Paul McTaggart, James Williams and Joe Whittaker are all sat in a row and are all chipped up, Whittaker has position on the other two. -- NW

5pm: Whittaker playing the bully
Joe Whittaker continues to add to his stack, the youngster has played very impressively today. On a [2d][4d][2h][10s] board there was around 47,000 in the pot. Whittaker checked from the big blind to Gordon Anderson who bet 20,400. Whittaker check-raised all-in, he had Anderson covered, who had perhaps 90,000 behind. He sighed and folded and Whittaker padded his stack to over 300,000. -- NW

One 15-minute break has just begun. Tournament staff are doing full chip counts of the 53 remaining players and we'll get them to you as soon as we can. -- NW

4.15pm: Brown busts Mcleod
Ewan Brown and Paul McLeod got it all-in on a flop of [5s][Jc][7d] with Brown holding [Kc][Qd] and McLeod [10c][10s], Brown turned one of his outs the [Qh] and the [7d] river was no help to McLeod who exited in 54th place. 55th place finisher and also winning £800 is Louis Scriven. -- NW

4.12pm: First cash: Kevin Williams
Kevin Williams is the first player to cash out here in Edinburgh. He got it in with [7s][7d] against Ian Bruce's [ac][8h] and was drawing thin after Bruce caught his ace. Williams adds £800 to his poker coffers. -- RD

Hawkins found bullets on the bubble

4.05pm: Bubble has burst
Nicolai Henschel eliminated by Keith Hawkins, details on the way. -- NW

3.55pm: Hand for hand
The play is still hand for hand and as TD Toby Stone has just reminded players: "If you're not in your sit when the hand is dealt then your hand is dead, guys." It's still not stopping some players from rushing from table to table when there's action. It never does. -- RD

3.50pm: On the bubble
Play has slowed down as we mount the bubble.

3.45pm: Big clash
Owen Robinson and Martiin Mulsow are two of the largest stacks in the tournament and they just clashed in a large pot. Robinson opened preflop and was called by Mulsow. The Irishman fired 17,000 at the [3h][9c][4h] flop and was raised to 36,000 by Mulsow. Robinson called. On the [8c] turn Mulsow asked for a count and was told 200,000 by Robinson. Both players checked before Robinson shoved the [7c] river for that same said 200,000.

Mulsow quickly passed admitting that he was 'just dicking around' on the flop. Mulsow seems to be enjoying his time at the table, laughing frequently. -- RD

3.40pm: Small goes large
Mantas Puidokas opened from the cut-off to 5,600 and Adam Small made it 15,000 from the button. Puidokas made the call and then led 14,200 into the [7h][2h][2s] board. Small then shoved all-in for 67,000 to win the pot. He flashed [ac][jh]. -- RD

3.30pm: Convey shoves into big slick
A short stacked Marc Convey shoved from the button into Jakub Klimek's big blind and was swiftly called. The PokerStars EPT blogger had some equity with his jack-ten facing Klimek's big slick and managed to go ahead on the flop before Klimek caught up on the turn. We have 62 players left and 56 spots paying out. -- RD

3.25pm: Risk takes out Docherty
David Docherty got his last 20,000 in against Nicholas Abou Risk, the latter's king-queen holding against king-three, Risk is now on around 165,000. Also out are John Angus and Marc Convey, details on Convey's exit coming right up. -- NW

3.20pm: Pretty Nitty
Just before the blinds went up Kevin Williams opened for 4,500 and Martin Mulsow made the call from the cut-off. They were joined by Luke Marsh, I believe, from the blinds. Williams bet 6,900 on the [td][7s][jd] flop, Mulsow called and Marsh got out of the way.

Williams slowed down on the [9c] turn check-calling 16,300 before both players checked the [7d] river. "Pretty nitty, I know," said Mulsow as he turned over the nuts straight with [qc][ks]. Williams is down to about 40,000. -- RD

LEVEL UP: BLINDS 1,200-2,400, ANTE 200

3.15pm: Lefew three-bets
Ben Lefew has come all the way from North America for this tournament and it's not the furst time either. Lefew finished third at UKIPT Galway at the beginning of the year and as well as being a great player also seems to be an inordinately nice guy to boot. Lefew has been keeping a low profile in the event but seems to be upping the aggression when necessary. Nicolai Henschel opened the pot for 4,500 from the cut-off and Lefew three-bet to 12,100. Henschel went into the tank - please don't tell me that we're stalling with ten players to the bubble - and finally had the clock called on him before folding. Lefew is up to 75,000. -- RD

3.10pm: Jesse May is out
The voice of poker has been silenced, in this tournament at least, Suzanne Pyefinch did the damage. -- NW

3.05pm: Convey still chipping away
PokerStars blogger Marc 'The Conv' Convey is still in although he's only got about 35,000. He recently moved in and got no callers to add some much needed chips to his stack. Jake Cody has been moved to his direct right. With 72 players left the bubble is approaching, average stack is around 88,000. -- NW

3.04pm: Robinson fails to find the trigger
Owen Robinson looked dangerously close to firing a bullet at the river of a [5c][js][jd][3h][ad] board but eventually decided not to turn his hand into bluff and showed pocket sixes. His opponent, Luke Marsh, showed pocket sevens to take the pot. -- RD

3pm: Double up for James Gray
James Gray has just doubled through Suzanne Pyefinch, all-in pre with pocket queens against [As][Qd] for 41,900. The flop of [5d][5h][5c] gave Pyefinch an additional out. But the [6c] [2s] turn and river blanked. -- NW

2.55pm: Neil 'Chirping Chips' Channing
That's what table mate Joeri Zandvliet has nicknamed him. Channing has doubled through Joeri, Channing's aces beating Zandlivet's pocket tens, "I made a small raise and he shoved,' said Channing. "Yep the idiot from Northern Europe paid him off," said Zandlivet. As this exchange was going on Channing was involved in another pot, he raised to 4,000 from early position and was flat called by Jeun-Pierre Gazian from the small blind. Gazian led for 6,100 on the [6c][8d][jd] flop. "Stop it," said Channing, "I was going to bet 6,200 but I'm not sure what to do now," he added. Channing settled on a raise to 16,100 total and Gazian folded. Channing is up to 60,000, still below average, but enough to chirp! -- NW

2.50pm: Nice value bet from Whittaker
On a board of [3c][4d][js][2d][7s] Joe Whittaker made a nice pot-sized 15,300 value bet into Paul Mctaggart who called and then mucked. Whittaker's [jc][qc] was more than enough to take the pot. Whittaker is chipped up to 150,000. -- RD

Joe Whittaker is chipping up nicely

2.40pm: Eurrggghhhh: gut wrencher for Thew
Julian Thew has just gone out in to a sickening one-outer. The Team PokerStars Pro had called Martin Mulsow's early position 5,200 raise as had Owen Robinson. On a flop of [a][j][7] Mulsow led out for 9,200. Thew raised to 20,000 and Mulsow moved all-in putting Thew's 60,00 stack at risk. Thew made the call tabling a dominating set with pocket jacks to Mulsow's pocket sevens. Turn: queen. River: seven.

As Thew recounted the hand to us in the bullpen just moments after the event he looked a little pale around the gills. "It was a really nice pot as well," said Thew a little regretfully. Indeed it was. The 130,000 pot boosts Mulsow into the chip lead with 280,000. -- RD

Yes, this was the same stunned look Thew had in the press room

2.35pm: So long Schwade
We've been following the Schwade brothers all tournament, Jonas went out on day 1B but his older brother Jan-Niclas made it through to day two, but we saw him standing on the rail and he told us about his exit hand, Joeri Zandvliet doing the damage. Schwade told us, "Zandvilet raised on the button and I called from the big blind with pocket sixes. The flop was [J][6][7] I check, he bets, I check raise, he calls. The turn was another jack and I jam 27,000 into a pot of 35,000 and he calls with pocket eights saying he thinks I'm on a draw. The river was another jack giving him a better full house." Zandvilet is up to around 120,000. -- NW

2.25pm: No joy for Hawkins
Dominik Hinzmann shoved 15,200 from the small blind and was quickly called by Keith Hawkins.

Hinzmann: [5c][8h]
Hawkins: [as][jc]

The flop instantly hit Hinzmann with [8d][7h][2d] and Hawkins failed to catch up. Hawkins drops to 25,000. -- RD

2.18pm: Whittaker wins one
Joe Whittaker won a nice pot just before the break, using pure aggression to move Conor Ainsworth off his hand. Both players put 5,600 each in on the turn of [Ad][3s][6h][2s], the river was the [2h] and Ainsworth fired 11,200. Whittaker moved all-in and Ainsworth folded. Whiitaker was up to just under 80,000 after the hand -- NW

2.15pm: Squeaky bum time
We're rapidly approaching the money here in Edinburgh with 84 players left and 56 players getting paid. As Alex Ferguson once said: "It's squeaky bum time." -- RD

UKIPT Edinburgh Day 2: Levels 10 & 11, blinds 800-1,600, ante 100

August 21st, 2010

ukiptthumb.JPG2.10pm: Summary of the last two levels that can fit on twitter
Team PokerStars Pros Ainsworth and Kelly eliminated, Thew in, at same table as co-chip leaders Robinson and Mulsow.

2pm: End of level
That's a 15-minute break for the players and we have what looks like 84 players left in. We started the day with 128. -- RD

1.55pm: McTaggart doesn't take on the risk
Paul McTaggart and Nicholas Abou Risk just played a big pot, both of them had over 125,000 to start the hand. McTaggart raised to 4,000 from early position and was flat called by Ahmed Amin before Abou Risk made it 13,800 to play. McTaggart then made it 35,000 to go. Amin folded, but Abou Risk moved all-in for around 125,000 total. McTaggart sighed tanked and said, "I heard you're a sicko," and then tanked some more before saying, "I play so bad," and folding. McTaggart has about 110,000 after the hand and Abou Risk 165,000. -- NW

1.50pm: Wolf gnaws Gallagher
On a [5c][2h][3s] board a whole lotta action went down between Christian Wolf and John Gallagher. In the space of maybe 20 seconds it went 7,000 from Wolf, 15,000 from Gallagher, all-in from Wolf and call from Gallagher, who was at risk and had about 55,000.

Gallagher: [Kd][Ks]
Wolf: [10d][10s]

Turn: [Jh]

River: [10c]

'Yes' shouted Wolf when he rivered the set. -- NW

1.45pm: Tough table for Thew
Team PokerStars Pro Julian Thew has increased his stack to around 95,000. However, he's been moved to the same table as Owen Robinson, Kevin Williams and Martin Mulsow, Thew is in the one seat, Robinson the three, Williams the four and Mulsow the seven. 'Great table draw,' said Thew! -- NW

1.35pm: Haughey Spews
Blind battles often end up messy but William Haughey will probably regret this moment as a little spewy. Haughey opened for 4,300 and was three-bet to 10,600. Haughey then shoved all-in for 60,000 and Robinson instantly called with [ah][kh]. What did Haughey have? A monster [jc][4d]. The board ran out [jd][td][5d][qh][2c] giving Robinson the straight despite the early top pair and flush draw scare. -- RD

1.25pm: Double up for Scrivens
Louis Scriven found himself all-in from the big blind for his 10,000 stack against Kevin Williams in the small blind who had three-bet a late position raiser. Williams showed [7d][8c] against Scriven's king-queen. The flop ran out a huge [as][5s][qh][ad][ac] giving Scriven a boat and more than a double up. -- RD

Kevin Williams is now sat on the left of Owen Robinson

1.20pm: Hill heads home
Mike Hill, currently second on the UKIPT leader board is out, William Haughey his assassin. On a [7d][5d][10d] flop Haughey led for 6,700 and Hill tanked. He emerged with an all-in bet of 32,300 and Haughey called.

Hill: [10s][9h]
Haughey: [Qd][10c]

Turn: [Qh]
River: [4h]

Hill wished the table good luck as he left. -- NW

1.10pm: Error compounds error
Jakub Klimek gave himself a secret lifeline when he was ruled to have called rather than have moved all-in as he wanted. Craig Burke had made a three-bet from the button and then checked the [4d][3d][9c] flop and Klimek shoved his remaining 20,000 across the line. Burke instantly called.

Burke: [kh][kc]
Klimek: [ad][jh]

The board blanked out and Burke moves up to 80,000 who said: "Ace-jack was the last hand I expected to see." -- RD

Jude Ainsworth: couldn't win his all important race

LEVEL UP: BLINDS 800-1,600, ANTE 200

12.55pm: Mulsow makes a great call
Martin Mulsow came into today with a stack of over 100,000 and if he continues making calls like he did in this hand it's only going to trend upwards. On the turn of a board reading [4h][8h][Kc][4c] Mulsow had bet 3,000 into a 8,500 pot and been raised to 11,000 by David Maclean, Muslow flat called. On the [Kd] river Mulsow checked to Maclean who bet 16,000. After some deep thought Mulsow made the call, his [Js][8s] ahead of Maclean's [Ac][Qc]. --NW

12.52pm: Channing's got chat
On a [Qs][6s][3c] board there was around 9,000 in the pot and Neil Channing had essentially moved all-in for 12,400 (he still had four black 100 denomination chips on his cards) and Jan Orlický was debating a call. 'I know what you have,' said Channing before channelling his inner Phil Hellmuth and sarcastically saying, 'I read souls.' Eventually Orlický folded and Chaning said, 'You had pocket eights,' to which Orlický replied, 'Didn't have a pair,' it seems the poker brats' 'special skill' is still a unique one. -- NW

12.50pm: Jude Ainsworth gone
Team PokerStars Pro Jude Ainsworth is out of the tournament. JP Kelly has just told us that his fellow Team Pro was knocked out with big slick against UKIPT Manchester winner Joeri Zandvliet's pocket nines. -- RD

12.45pm: JP Kelly KO'd by aces
Team PokerStars Pro JO Kelly hasn't had the best start to the day. In fact, it's been fairly terrible and he's just run kings into aces to knock himself out of the tournament. James Rann opened for 2,500, Kelly made it 7,000, Rann four-bet to 15,000 and Kelly shoved all-in for 55,000. Rann made the obvious call with his aces and Kelly failed to catch his two-outer or any kind of funky four card draw. Rann is up to 110,000. -- RD

ukipt edinburgh_day 2_jp kelly.jpg

Kelly's cooler was unavoidable

12.40pm: Another half dozen are down
The bust outs continue apace here, UKIPT Killarney 6th place finisher David Rowley amongst those to have lost their chip and a chair. -- NW

12.37pm: Zandvliet off to a flyer
UKIPT Manchester winner Joeri Zandvliet is off to a good start and has increased his stack from 45,700 to over 65,000 in the opening 30 minutes. He told us he won a pot against Owen Robinson with king-ten against pocket jacks when he rivered two pair. Since then he's been moved tables and is now sat to the left of Neil Channing. -- NW

12.35pm: Sparring partners
Dave McCallum and Paul Humphrey have chosen each other as punch bag buddies. First Humphrey got himself all-in with [qs][qh] against McCallum's [ad][jd] for a nice double up and then he check-folded to McCallum on a [tc][6d][9h] flop. -- RD

12.30pm: JP pays off the cowboys
On the river of a [7h][6c][2c][2h][5c] board and around 12,000 in the pot, JP Kelly was considering whether to call Robert Bain's 6,500 river bet, the Team PokerStars pro did indeed call but mucked upon seeing Bain's [Kd][Ks]. Kelly is down to about 53,000. -- NW

12.25pm: Robinson bullying from the outset
Owen Robinson arrived today with a terrifying stack and he doesn't look like he's going to slow down. Robinson opened for 2,800 and Mark Scarman called in the hijack. Both players checked the [6d][tc][5h] flop as Scarman stared down Robinson. The look didn't seem to affect Robinson who led for 2,800 on the turn and picked up a fold on the [2d]. -- RD

12.20pm: Falling thick and fast
Early day for: Timothy Dearing, Peajmaan Khosrowpour, Dominic Evans, Tom Gill, Sam Onions. That's nine out in the first 25 minutes by our reckoning. -- NW

12.15pm: Bousfield busts Shepherd
Laurie Shepherd moved all-in for his last 11,500 and was looked up by John Bousfield. Shepherd had [6h][6c], Bousfield [Ac][Kd] and Shepherd's sixes couldn't hold on a [10d][Qd][Kc][7s][2s] board. Bousfield is up to 35,000. -- NW

12.05pm: Early Exits
Day two is traditional for a spate of early bust outs and we've lost three in the first couple of hands. First man out was Ben Dobson who shoved all-in for 15,000 from the small blind with [7d][8d] and ran into big blind John Hunter's pocket aces. Also out are Anthony Mcshane and Alan Gratton. -- NW

11.55pm: Play set to start for Day 2
We have 128 players coming back today from a starting field of 401 and we'll be playing eight-handed all day long. Combine that with growing antes and huge differences in chip stacks and we should see plenty of early casualties from the outset. Owen Robinson is leading the action with 181,900. -- RD
